I’d like to introduce you to Edgar Allan & Poe! Both of their journeys began at the MDSPCA in Baltimore, MD.
Poe joined my family first. Within a day of moving into my new home in November 2009, I knew it was finally time to adopt my first fur-baby. I remember being incredibly excited. When I arrived at the shelter I knew one thing… I wanted a black cat! Knowing they were usually the last to be adopted, I placed them first on my list! I went straight to the nursery, met a very cute 2 months old kitten named “Manny” and decided he was the one. As I was filling in the paper work, I noticed a sign with a list of adult long-term cats looking for a home. I decided to go meet these kitties too. I walked into the adult cat room and a sweet, gentle paw tapped my shoulder. When I looked up the sweetest green eyes were looking right at me. That is the moment “Sunday” became Poe :) At 4 months old, Poe was found as a stray… at 4 months old, Poe was destined for a life full of unconditional love!
Fast forward to August 2015! After fostering 2 incredible dogs for the Baltimore Humane Society, I found myself ready to finally adopt MY forever pup! In fact, 2 1/2 hours prior to meeting Edgar Allan, I was saying a bittersweet farewell to my wonderful foster pup of 6 months! On my way home I decided to visit the MDSPCA. I wanted to do some self-reflection. Remind myself although it’s very heartbreaking and bittersweet to say farewell to a foster, that there are so many more wonderful dogs in need of that same love. I wasn’t planning on meeting yet another love of my life this day. I had a vacation planned in 3 weeks and knew I should wait until I returned… As I walked along the kennels there he was! “Donny”! The cutest black and white dog with the best ears I have ever seen! I kneeled down to say hello. He was so gentle and sweet. I decided to meet him outside of his kennel.
Needless to say, I fell in love with him right away. I spoke with the counselors who all knew I just said “see you later” to my foster pup. I told them I didn’t want to be impulsive, but it felt so right. We decided that I should fill in the application and they would hold him for me for the next 24 hours. As we chatted the counselor told me he was glad that I was putting serious thought into everything, but he also had a really good feeling about it. After completing the paper work I asked to see “Donny” again… this time we met in the family room area… this sweet, gentle pup walked in… as I sat on the floor with my legs crossed Donny climbed into my lap and curled up… Needless to say, that was the end and beginning of our love story. The next day Edgar Allan joined my family with his big brother Poe :)
